Checklist before submitting an EUDR due diligence statement (geolocation)
A practical checklist for the geolocation part of a due diligence statement: file format, coordinates, shapes, properties and limits, each linked to the rule behind it.
In short
- The file. GeoJSON, UTF-8, valid JSON, not in an archive, under 25 MB for the whole statement.
- The coordinates. WGS 84 decimal degrees, longitude first, at least six decimals, no duplicates once cut to six.
- The shapes. Points or polygons only; polygons closed, not crossing themselves, without holes; polygons for plots over four hectares unless cattle.
- The properties. ProducerName, ProducerCountry, ProductionPlace, Area spelled exactly; ProducerCountry a two-letter code on every plot in a Type II file; Area a number in hectares.
- The sense check. Every plot in its declared country, no plot declared twice, sizes plausible for the commodity.
This checklist covers the geolocation file only, not the rest of your due diligence. Everything on it is something the checker tests automatically; the list is here so you know what "passes" means, and why.
1. The file
- It is GeoJSON, not a PDF, spreadsheet or KML This file is not JSON (FILE-001)
- It is valid JSON The file has a JSON syntax error (FILE-002)
- It is UTF-8, without a byte order mark The file is not valid UTF-8 text (FILE-005) The file starts with a byte order mark (FILE-004)
- It is not in a password-protected archive The file is a password-protected archive (FILE-006)
- All the geolocation for the statement is under 25 MB The file is larger than 25 MB (FILE-003)
- At most 1,000 producers per commodity This file has more producers than one statement allows (FILE-008)
2. The coordinates
- WGS 84, decimal degrees These coordinates are not in WGS84 degrees (COORD-006)
- Longitude first Longitude and latitude look swapped (COORD-003)
- In range A longitude is outside -180 to 180 (COORD-001) A latitude is outside -90 to 90 (COORD-002)
- At least six decimals Coordinates carry fewer than six decimal places (COORD-004)
- No two consecutive points identical at six decimals Two points in a row become identical at six decimals (COORD-005)
3. The shapes
- Points and polygons only, no lines This shape type is not accepted for production places (STRU-002)
- Every polygon closed This polygon is not closed (GEOM-001), not crossing itself The boundary of this plot crosses itself (GEOM-003), without holes This plot has a hole in it (GEOM-005)
- A polygon for every plot over four hectares, unless cattle A plot over 4 hectares cannot be a single point (PROP-005)
4. The properties
- Names spelled exactly: ProducerName, ProducerCountry, ProductionPlace, Area A property name is misspelled or has the wrong capitals (PROP-001)
- ProducerCountry a two-letter ISO code ProducerCountry is not a valid two-letter country code (PROP-002), on every plot of a Type II file A Type II file needs ProducerCountry on every plot (FILE-007)
- Area a number, in hectares Area is written as text instead of a number (PROP-003), and given for points This point has no Area, so it will be treated as 4 hectares (PROP-004)
5. The sense check
- Each plot inside its declared country This plot is not inside the country you declared (PLAUS-001)
- No plot declared twice Two plots in this file overlap or are identical (PLAUS-002)
- Declared areas match the shapes The declared Area does not match the shape you drew (PROP-007)
Keep a record of the check. The PDF check report (Starter and above) lists every finding, the file's SHA-256 and the rule set the file was checked against; the free change log lists every change made.
