In short
Remove the quotation marks. We can fix every occurrence at once.

What the Information System does

It does not read it as a number. The specification's own example: ""Area": "3" instead of "Area": 3 will result in area = 0 because the value 3 in quotes is not recognized as a number which is what is expected" (GeoJSON File Description, Common errors 14).

Why it happens

In JSON, 3 is a number and "3" is text. The Information System expects a number, and reads text as zero.

Zero is not a harmless default. For a point, Area is the size of the plot; an area of zero is below the minimum the system accepts (0.0001 hectares), so the file fails on a second rule too. And a plot declared as zero hectares is not the plot you meant to declare.

Quoted areas come from spreadsheets where the column was formatted as text, from decimal commas ("3,5"), and from scripts that write every property as a string.

A broken example

{
  "type": "FeatureCollection",
  "features": [
    {
      "type": "Feature",
      "properties": {
        "ProducerCountry": "CI",
        "ProductionPlace": "Quoted area",
        "Area": "3"
      },
      "geometry": {
        "type": "Point",
        "coordinates": [-5.123456, 6.123456]
      }
    }
  ]
}

What the checker reports for this file:

  1. Area is written as "3" in quotation marks. The Information System does not read that as a number, so the area silently becomes 0, with no error shown to you., line 9, column 17
Before
Before. Centred on 6.1235° N, 5.1235° W.
After the fix
After the fix. Made Area on plot 1 a number: "3" became 3. Centred on 6.1235° N, 5.1235° W.

Fix it in EUDRplot

  1. Open the file in the checker. Each quoted Area is listed.
  2. Make them numbers. Choose Make Area a number, or Fix N safe problems. The quotation marks are removed; the value stays the same. A decimal comma ("3,5") is read as 3.5.

Fix it in QGIS

  1. Change the field type. Run Refactor fields, set Area's type to Decimal (double) and its source expression to to_real(replace("Area", ',', '.')).
  2. Export. Save as GeoJSON. Numbers are written without quotes.
