Error GEOM-001
Unclosed polygon: first and last coordinates must be the same
Every polygon must end where it started. An open shape encloses nothing, and the system rejects it.
- Severity
- Error. The Information System rejects the file, or silently stores something other than what you meant.
- Fixed automatically?
- Yes, in one click. The change is listed in the change log.
- In short
- Repeat the first coordinate pair at the end of the ring. This adds no area and is always safe.
What the Information System does
It rejects them. "“Open” polygons. All polygons must represent closed shapes (i.e. the 1st coordinate pair same as the last)" is one of the common file errors (GeoJSON File Description, Common errors 4), and the definitions say "the first and last point's coordinates of polygons are the same" (GeoJSON File Description, Definitions).
Why it happens
GeoJSON does not close a polygon for you. The ring has to list its first point again at the end, so a four-cornered field is written with five positions:
[[-4.3774, 5.3248], [-4.3765, 5.3249], [-4.3764, 5.3240], [-4.3773, 5.3239], [-4.3774, 5.3248]]
Most GIS software writes this automatically. Open rings come from hand-written files, scripts, spreadsheets with one row per corner, and GPS apps that stop recording at the last corner rather than back at the first. Closing them is always safe: the closing side is the one the shape implied anyway.

}What the checker reports for this file:
Fix it in EUDRplot
- Open the file in the checker. Every open ring is listed, with the gap between its first and last point.
- Close them. Choose Close the boundary, or Fix N safe problems. The first point is repeated at the end of each ring; the enclosed area does not change.
- Download. Open Download and choose GeoJSON file.
Fix it in QGIS
This is a problem in the text, and whether QGIS closes the ring for you when it reads the file depends on the GDAL version it uses, so do not rely on it. The fix is to repeat the first coordinate pair at the end of the ring. The checker does it for every ring at once, and confirms the area is unchanged.
