EUDR geolocation

EUDR geolocation, explained and checked.

Every relevant product needs the geolocation of every plot of land where its commodity was produced. What that means in practice, and how EUDRplot checks your files against the Information System's rules.

Article 2(28) of the regulation defines geolocation as the latitude and longitude of at least one point, with at least six decimal digits. For plots of more than four hectares used to produce commodities other than cattle, it is a polygon with enough points to describe the perimeter of each plot.

The file the Information System expects

The Commission's GeoJSON file description sets out the format: a FeatureCollection in WGS 84, Points, Polygons and MultiPolygons, an Area property on points, and ProducerCountry when a file covers several producers. The system validates the file on upload and rejects what breaks its rules.

The problems that come up most

Latitude and longitude swapped. Polygons that cross themselves, usually where a corner was added at the end. Coordinates rounded to four or five decimals by a spreadsheet. Points for plots that are clearly bigger than four hectares. The free checker finds each of these, and the error reference explains them one by one.

Questions

When is a point enough?

For plots of four hectares or less, a single point with six decimals is enough, with the plot's area. Above four hectares, a polygon describing the perimeter is required, except for cattle.

What is the geolocation for cattle?

The geolocation of every establishment where the cattle were kept. Points are accepted for establishments.

Can I use the postal address instead?

Only in the simplified declaration of micro and small primary operators, and only where the address identifies the plot. Due diligence statements need coordinates.
