Deforestation-free | EUDR glossary
What deforestation-free means under the EUDR, for agricultural commodities and for wood, and how geolocation supports the claim.
‘deforestation-free’ means: (a) that the relevant products contain, have been fed with or have been made using, relevant commodities that were produced on land that has not been subject to deforestation after 31 December, 2020; and (b) in the case of relevant products that contain or have been made using wood, that the wood has been harvested from the forest without inducing forest degradation after 31 December, 2020
Being deforestation-free is the first of three conditions for placing a product on the market, alongside legal production and a due diligence statement (Regulation (EU) 2023/1115, Art. 3).
Part (b) adds a second test for wood only: no forest degradation after the cut-off date, not just no deforestation.
A checker like this one says nothing about whether land is deforestation-free. It makes sure the geolocation that such an assessment depends on is readable and in the right place.
