EUDR geolocation for wood: concessions, forest degradation and large polygons
Wood geolocation under the EUDR: large forest polygons, the extra forest-degradation test, holes in concessions, and the product list changes.
Wood covers the longest list in Annex I: logs, sawn wood, panels, pulp and paper, furniture, packaging and more (Regulation (EU) 2023/1115, Annex I). Printed products were removed by the 2025 amendment (Regulation (EU) 2025/2650, Art. 1), and Delegated Regulation (EU) 2026/2102 clarifies that waste, used and second-hand products are outside several entries (Delegated Regulation (EU) 2026/2102).
One extra test
For wood, deforestation-free also means harvested "without inducing forest degradation after 31 December, 2020" (Regulation (EU) 2023/1115, Art. 2(13)), for example, primary forest turned into plantation (Regulation (EU) 2023/1115, Art. 2(7)). The exact boundary of the harvest area matters, because different parts of a concession can have different histories.
What wood files tend to look like
- Large polygons. Forest management units and concessions are far above four hectares (Regulation (EU) 2023/1115, Art. 2(28)), and their boundaries are detailed.
- Holes. Concessions routinely exclude conservation areas, villages or other titles from inside their boundary, drawn as holes, which the Information System rejects.
- Projected coordinates from forestry GIS.
Problems to look for
- This plot has a hole in it (GEOM-005): exclusions drawn as holes; the hole splitter redraws them as pieces without holes.
- The file is larger than 25 MB (FILE-003): detailed boundaries over 25 MB.
- These coordinates are not in WGS84 degrees (COORD-006): UTM or national grids.
- One shape inside this MultiPolygon is invalid (GEOM-007): one bad part in a multi-part concession.
Our plausibility range for wood
With the commodity set to wood, the checker questions a plot under 0.1 ha or over 500,000 ha. These bounds are ours, not the regulation’s, and deliberately wide: they catch units mistakes, not unusual farms. They are never a reason the Information System would reject a file.
